Insomnia: everyone has experienced it at least once. Acute insomnia is sleep loss for a single episode or intermittent episodes for a few weeks. Chronic insomnia is sleep loss at least 3 nights a week for 3 months or more. The disorder includes trouble falling and/or staying asleep.

Primary insomnia is due to changes in sleep pattern, stress & overstimulation (noises light temperature) Secondary insomnia, which is more insidious, may be due to sleep apnea, hyperthyroid ism/endocrine disorders, depression or anxiety, medications, pain/discomfort/restless leg syndrome. Caffeine, tobacco, or alcohol use can also trigger insomnia

Insomnia affects women more than men and older people more than younger ones. Young & middle-age African Americans also have a higher risk. Long term & mental illness’ (high blood pressure obesity depression & anxiety) also correlate with insomnia. Elderly people have a higher risk for falls

Allopathic treatment is general & medicated. Unless secondary issues are present, everyone gets the same advice, sleep aid recommendations. If the problem is acute, there may be no treatment suggestions-wait & see-until the insomnia becomes a chronic issue

Acupuncture treats the individual person, the individual pattern, based on clinical diagnosis. Two people can walk in for the same insomnia complaint, but the treatment may be extremely different & diverse. There are also specific acupuncture points meant to treat insomnia, used concomitantly with points based on pattern diagnosis
